The hike to the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains takes about 1.5 hours round-trip. It is relatively easy compared to Vinicunca and is suitable for beginners.

No prior hiking experience is necessary. However, due to the altitude (around 4,900 meters), it is recommended to be in good physical condition and to spend a few days acclimatizing in Cusco before the tour.

You should bring comfortable hiking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, warm layers (the weather can be cold at higher altitudes), and snacks if needed. A small backpack is recommended to carry your personal items.

Altitude sickness is a possibility since Palcoyo is located at a high elevation. It’s recommended to acclimatize in Cusco for at least two days before the tour. We provide an oxygen supply during the tour, and our guides are trained to assist if symptoms occur.

The tour includes round-trip transportation from Cusco, a bilingual guide (English/Spanish), breakfast and lunch, entrance fees to Palcoyo, and first aid assistance including oxygen.

The hike is considered easy to moderate. The terrain is mostly flat with a gradual incline, and the pace is slow to allow for enjoyment of the scenery and to accommodate the high altitude.

We strongly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Cusco to acclimatize before the tour. This will help you better handle the altitude and enjoy the experience without discomfort.

The weather in Palcoyo can vary throughout the day. Mornings can be cold, but temperatures rise slightly as the day progresses. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including strong winds or light rain, especially in the afternoon.

There are basic restroom facilities available at certain points during the drive and near the Palcoyo trailhead. We recommend carrying your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as the amenities may be limited.
