The Journey

Day by day

A chronicle of each day — follow the route on the map, uncover the secrets of every destination.

Daily Summary

Day 1

Lima to Arequipa: The White City

The flight south to Arequipa lands at two thousand three hundred metres — the acclimatisation altitude before the canyon rim. The afternoon in the city: the Santa Catalina monastery, the sillar white stone streets, the volcanic skyline with three peaks above the basin. A light dinner at a picanterías in the market ring, an early sleep. Tomorrow, the canyon begins.

Insider Secret

Two nights in Arequipa before the canyon rim is not excessive. The canyon trek begins at three thousand metres. Every hour of acclimatisation reduces the effort on the descent.

Day 2

Arequipa to Chivay: The Rim Villages

The road from Arequipa to Chivay crosses the Patapampa pass at four thousand nine hundred metres — the highest point of the journey, with herds of vicuña on the hillside. Chivay is the gateway village to the Colca: terraced hillsides, the church on the square, the thermal baths fed by the same volcanic activity that formed the canyon. The afternoon is for rest at altitude.

Insider Secret

The Patapampa pass at dawn is often in cloud. The afternoon crossing is clearer. The vicuña do not move for vehicles but they will move for people on foot.

Day 3

The Descent: Three Thousand Metres in One Morning

The descent begins at Cabanaconde, on the canyon rim. The path drops through five temperature zones in four hours: the cold at the rim, the temperate scrub, the dry heat of the canyon walls, the subtropical oasis at the base. The last section crosses the Colca River on a narrow suspension bridge. The oasis receives in warmth — palm trees, flowers, natural pool.

Insider Secret

The descent to the Colca Canyon base takes four hours. The ascent takes six. Carry three litres of water for the descent. The oasis has none for sale.

Day 4

The Oasis: The Night at the Bottom

The Sangalle oasis at the canyon base has a small lodge with natural pools — thermal springs from the volcanic activity above. The afternoon is for nothing: the pool, the canyon walls rising straight up on both sides, the silence broken only by the river. The stars at the canyon base are framed by stone walls on both sides. The condors are above. Tomorrow, the ascent.

Insider Secret

The oasis lodge has no Wi-Fi, no phone signal and no electricity after nine. This is not a flaw. It is the correct condition for a night at the bottom of the deepest canyon in the Americas.

Day 5

The Ascent and the Condors

The ascent from the oasis begins at four in the morning to reach Cabanaconde before the midday heat. Six hours climbing what took four to descend — the body remembers the grade and finds its pace. The Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint in the late afternoon: the condors use the canyon thermals between noon and three, circling at eye level from the viewpoint rim, the wingspan wider than a person is tall.

Insider Secret

The Andean condor has a wingspan of up to three point two metres. At the Cruz del Cóndor they pass at exactly eye level. There is no fence between the viewpoint and the birds.

Day 6

Return to Arequipa: The City After the Canyon

The drive back to Arequipa crosses the Patapampa pass a second time — lower this time because the body has been lower. The city receives with a private spa and a dinner at Chicha where the meal that follows six days at altitude and one night at the canyon base earns its attention. The departure flight from Arequipa to Lima completes the arc.

Insider Secret

Arequipa after the Colca Canyon looks different. The city that seemed high at two thousand three hundred metres now feels low. The body recalibrates altitude faster than the mind.
