Machu Picchu by Train

Your complete guide to every train option

The Editorial

The train journey from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes is one of the great rail experiences of South America — winding through the Sacred Valley, descending into cloud forest, arriving at the foot of the most iconic site in the Americas. We compare every option so you can choose with confidence.

Chapter One · The Line

How to Take the Train

There is no road to the sanctuary. The railway follows the Urubamba — and the journey itself is part of the destination.

01

The Stations

Three departure points

Poroy and San Pedro depart from Cusco; Ollantaytambo, from the heart of the Sacred Valley. The latter is our recommendation: lower altitude, shorter ride, and time to acclimatise beforehand.

02

The Operators

Two companies, eight experiences

PeruRail and Inca Rail share the line, but not the spirit. From the functional car to the restored 1920s Pullman, each operator offers a different reading of the same landscape.

03

The Route

Three hours through cloud forest

The descent from 2,800 metres to Aguas Calientes crosses terraces, rivers and vegetation that shifts from highland to high jungle. The carriage window is an open book on Andean geography.

The train is not the quickest way to Machu Picchu — it is the only honest way to arrive.

Chapter Two · The Decision

How to Choose Your Train

Three honest questions before booking. The right answer isn't the most expensive — it's the one that matches how you travel.

To arrive — or to travel?

I

Temperament

To arrive — or to travel?

For some, the train is merely a means: the destination is Machu Picchu. For others, the three-hour descent is half the experience. If you belong to the latter, consider services with an observation deck or panoramic carriages.

One day — or unhurried?

II

Pace

One day — or unhurried?

Some leave at dawn, visit the citadel, and return to Cusco the same evening. We suggest otherwise: a night in Aguas Calientes or the Sacred Valley lets the site reveal itself without the pressure of a schedule.

What buys the atmosphere?

III

Budget

What buys the atmosphere?

The gap between a functional service and the restored Pullman can be five to tenfold. What you pay for: fine dining on rails, live music, and the quiet of a carriage with barely thirty guests.

Chapter Three · The Notebook

Notes from the Road

Small details we learned travelling this line. Each one can shape the day.

01

Luggage

Five kilos per passenger

Trains to Machu Picchu allow one carry-on (5kg / 62 linear inches). Everything else stays at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley — every good hotel offers complimentary storage.

02

Altitude

Acclimatise first

Cusco sits at 3,400m. Aguas Calientes at 2,040m. If you arrive on an international flight, we recommend at least one night in the Sacred Valley before boarding the train — your body will thank you.

03

Timing

The dawn service

The most coveted departures are at dawn: the low light over the Urubamba is unrepeatable. If you only have a day, take the first train and the last one back — and bring a torch for Aguas Calientes.

04

Reservation

Three months ahead

Premium services sell out months in advance, especially between May and September. Book your train and your site ticket in tandem — they are separate tickets.

05

Seats

The left side

Departing Ollantaytambo for Aguas Calientes, left-side seats offer the best views of the Urubamba River. On the return, the right side. Request it when booking.

06

Connection

From train to site

Aguas Calientes lies at the foot of the mountain. From there, a 25-minute bus climbs to the Machu Picchu entrance. Buy the bus ticket in advance — the queue can take an hour in high season.

Every train journey to Machu Picchu is bespoke. If you prefer, we can take every detail off your hands.
