Peru's undiscovered north

PeruTrujilloEspañol

Most visitors never reach north of Lima — which means Peru's most astonishing pre-Inca civilisations remain gloriously uncrowded. Chan Chan, the largest adobe city ever built, stretches for 20 square kilometres and receives a fraction of Machu Picchu's footfall. Kuelap, older and more remote, sits on a cloud-forest ridge above the canyon of the Utcubamba. And at the end, the Pacific at Máncora: warm water, consistent swells, a handful of private villas. The north rewards those who seek an undiluted Peru.

Where to go

Trujillo & Chan Chan

N° 01

Trujillo & Chan Chan

Trujillo is the north's colonial capital: a handsome grid of Spanish baroque churches and pastel mansions around a main square that rivals Cusco for architectural grandeur. Fifteen minutes from the centre, Chan Chan is the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas — the capital of the Chimú Empire at its peak in the 14th century, built entirely in adobe. We arrange exclusive early-morning access before the site opens to general visitors, with Peru's leading Chimú archaeologist as guide.

N° 02

Chiclayo & the Lord of Sipán

The 1987 discovery of the Lord of Sipán — a royal Moche burial intact for 1,700 years — rewrote South American archaeology. The Huaca Rajada royal tombs and the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum in Lambayeque hold the finest collection of pre-Columbian goldwork in the hemisphere. We arrange after-hours private museum visits and access to active archaeological excavations not open to the public.

Chachapoyas & Kuelap

N° 03

Chachapoyas & Kuelap

The fortress of Kuelap was built by the Chachapoyas people between the 6th and 16th centuries on a cloud-forest ridge at 3,000 metres — earlier than Machu Picchu, and considerably less visited. Access is by cable car over a canyon of extraordinary depth. The Gocta waterfall, one of the world's highest at 771 metres, lies 90 minutes away. We pair both sites in a two-day private circuit with an archaeologist specialising in the pre-Inca cultures of the north.

The Calendar

When to go

April – November: Recommended for All Zones

The coast is sunny and dry year-round, but April to November brings the clearest skies and lowest humidity to the highland archaeological zones. Chachapoyas and Kuelap are best accessed in the dry months when highland roads are reliable and the cloudforest trails are walkable. Trujillo and Chan Chan are pleasant throughout the year — the coastal desert has almost no rain.

December – March: Highland Rains, Coastal Sun

The highland zone around Chachapoyas and the Andean corridor receives significant rainfall from December to March. Kuelap can be accessed but misty conditions obscure the views; roads to remote sites can be affected. The coast — Trujillo, Chiclayo, Máncora — remains excellent. This is the best period for Máncora surf conditions and warm water swimming, making a north coast-only itinerary particularly attractive.

Unique experiences

Private dawn access to Chan Chan — the world's largest adobe city — before any other visitor arrives, with Peru's leading Chimú archaeologist as sole guide. After-hours access to the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum in Lambayeque, with the museum director presenting the Lord of Sipán's burial assemblage in private. A private helicopter transfer to Kuelap, landing directly above the fortress — bypassing the cable car entirely. A dedicated surf coaching session at Máncora with a former national champion, followed by a private seafood dinner on the beach.
