The Best Time to Travel to Peru: Month by Month
Twelve months, three regions, concrete criteria —not generalist 'May-October'.
By Kada Travel Editorial
"May to October" is the standard simplified answer. Reality is more nuanced: Peru has three regions with opposite climates, and the "best month" depends on the priority destination. A month ideal for Cusco can be bad for the Amazon, and vice versa. This guide describes the twelve months with concrete data.
January — the highland rainy season
Highlands (Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu): full rainy season. Daily afternoon rains, fresh and humid mornings. Temperature: 8-18°C. Rural roads with mud. Inca Trail open but muddy. Machu Picchu visitable but with frequent fog.
Coast (Lima): summer. Sun, heat, 22-28°C. Lima's warmest month.
Jungle (Manú, Tambopata): full rainy season. High rivers (better for navigation), active fauna, maximum mosquitoes. Some lodges close due to inaccessibility.
Recommendation: travel in January only if priority is coastal Lima or accepting highland landscape with fog. Low prices, available hotels, not recommended as first trip.
February — Inca Trail closed
Highlands: intense rainy season. Classic Inca Trail CLOSED during February for maintenance. Machu Picchu still open but with climate difficulties.
Coast: high summer. 24-30°C in Lima.
Jungle: maximum rains. Some lodges closed.
Recommendation: avoid February for highlands. Worst month for Cusco/Machu Picchu. Acceptable for coastal Lima or Paracas/Nazca (where it does not rain due to desert coast).
March — end of rains
Highlands: decreasing rains. Frequent clear mornings, possible afternoon storms. Inca Trail reopens March 1. Temperature: 10-19°C.
Coast: end of summer, 22-26°C.
Jungle: decreasing rains. Active migratory birds.
Recommendation: acceptable for flexible travellers accepting some rain. Still low prices. Good month to combine warm Lima with humid highlands.
April — the transition month
Highlands: transition to dry season. Sporadic rains. Clean skies most days. Green landscapes (better for photography). Temperature: 8-20°C.
Coast: autumn begins in Lima, 20-24°C.
Jungle: end of rains. Good fauna observation.
Recommendation: one of the best months. Balance between green landscapes (post-rain) and clear skies. Still reasonable prices. Inca Trail open. Recommended for photographers.
May — high-season opening
Highlands: dry season. Blue skies, cold morning air, sunny midday. Temperature: 4-19°C (morning frost in Cusco).
Coast: autumn in Lima, 18-22°C, frequent garúa.
Jungle: dry season begins. Jungle walks more comfortable (fewer mosquitoes, firm ground).
Recommendation: excellent month. Start of high season but without saturation. Inti Raymi prepares for June. Prices rise 10-15% but availability still comfortable.
June — Inti Raymi and high season
Highlands: consolidated dry season. Perfect skies. Temperature: 0-19°C (colder). June 24: Inti Raymi, sun festival in Cusco. Reservations six months ahead.
Coast: cold Lima with daily garúa. 14-18°C.
Jungle: dry season. Best Manú month.
Recommendation: June is excellent for highlands and jungle. High prices due to season and Inti Raymi. Scarce availability in Cusco during the last week.
July — the high-season peak
Highlands: maximum dry season. Perfect skies. Strong morning cold (-5 to 18°C in Cusco). July 28: Independence Day, Lima in celebration.
Coast: cold Lima with garúa, 14-17°C.
Jungle: dry season. Best month for Manú and Tambopata.
Recommendation: July is international tourism peak. Full hotels, prices 25-35% higher, restaurants with waits. Book 6-8 months ahead. For Lima garúa lovers: the most characteristic month.
August — the second peak
Highlands: dry season continues. Strong winds on some dates. Blue skies. Temperature: -3 to 19°C.
Coast: garúa continues, 14-17°C.
Jungle: dry season continues.
Recommendation: similar to July. Full hotels, high prices. If priority is seeing Peru with perfect skies and tolerating crowds, August works. Reservations 6-8 months.
September — the optimal balance
Highlands: dry season ending. Blue skies but less intense. Temperature: 2-20°C. Crowds decreasing.
Coast: end of garúa. 16-20°C.
Jungle: dry season.
Recommendation: the best month per many travellers. Good climate, prices decreasing from August, more accessible hotels, decreasing crowds. Optimal balance between climate, prices and availability.
October — dry-season closing
Highlands: end of dry season. Sporadic rains toward month-end. Temperature: 4-21°C.
Coast: spring in Lima, 17-22°C, more frequent sun.
Jungle: rainy season begins.
Recommendation: another excellent month. Good prices, available hotels, landscape still green from dry season. Recommended for flexible travellers.
November — rain begins in highlands
Highlands: rains returning, especially in second half. Temperature: 7-21°C. Greening landscapes.
Coast: spring in Lima, 18-23°C.
Jungle: rainy season.
Recommendation: acceptable for first half. Low prices, less touristy ambience. For travellers accepting some daily rain.
December — summer on coast, rains in highlands
Highlands: daily afternoon rains. Temperature: 8-19°C. Inca Trail open but muddy. Machu Picchu visitable but with fog.
Coast: summer beginning, 20-26°C in Lima. Frequent sun.
Jungle: intense rainy season.
Recommendation: only for Lima and Peruvian coast (Paracas, Nazca, Trujillo). Avoid highlands and jungle due to rains.
The standard "May-October" leaves out April and November, two months of excellent quality with fewer tourists. For photographers, slope green in April surpasses September yellow. For contained budgets, April and November save 20-30% over July-August without sacrificing much climate.
