The Best Boutique Hotels in the Sacred Valley
Sol y Luna, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, Explora — the hotels that justify sleeping in the valley.
By Kada Travel Editorial
The Sacred Valley of the Urubamba concentrates five boutique hotels that justify on their own sleeping in the valley rather than Cusco. Four of them belong to Relais & Châteaux or equivalent brands (Inkaterra, Explora). The fifth, Sol y Luna, was the first Relais & Châteaux in Peru and remains the reference. This guide compares them with concrete data and proposes which suits each traveller.
Sol y Luna, Relais & Châteaux
The Sol y Luna, on the outskirts of Urubamba, is the most considered Sacred Valley hotel and Peru's first Relais & Châteaux (affiliated 2007). Forty-three independent casitas in five-hectare gardens with cypresses and eucalyptus, two restaurants (Killa Wasi for international cuisine, Wayra for outdoor Peruvian grill with equestrian show), spa with Andean treatments, equestrian school with Peruvian Paso horses. Restored rural-mansion atmosphere.
The distinctive piece is the Sol y Luna Foundation —free primary school for 200 valley children, funded by hotel earnings and guest donations. Guests can visit the school during private guided visits. The hotel we most recommend for honeymoon and travellers valuing isolation.
Rate: USD 520-980 per night, double. Recommended for honeymoon.
Explora Sacred Valley
The Explora Sacred Valley, in Urquillos, is the contemporary version: fifty minimalist-design rooms with view of Inca terraces, daily-excursion programme included (guided hikes, cultural visits, cycling), cuisine with local produce. All-inclusive, no à la carte option.
The Explora concept —a Chilean brand with presence in Patagonia, Atacama and now the Sacred Valley— is for the active traveller wanting to go out every day. Guests spend little time at the hotel: schedule is built around excursions (9 AM and 3 PM, with lunch en route). For couples or solos wanting to maximise outdoor experience, the ideal option.
Rate: USD 850-1,300 per night, double, all-inclusive (excursions, meals, premium drinks). Recommended for active travellers.
Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba
The Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, in a restored colonial hacienda, is the intermediate option. Thirty-six rooms distributed around an organic garden supplying the restaurant, astronomical observatory for clear nights (at 2,870m, skies are extraordinary), spa, two restaurants, optional activities programme (not included).
Difference from Sol y Luna is style. Inkaterra is more rustic (wood finishes, hacienda decoration), Sol y Luna more refined (colonial-boutique decoration). For families with older children, Inkaterra Hacienda wins —more open space and activities for children.
Rate: USD 460-720. Recommended for families.
Tambo del Inka, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa
The Tambo del Inka, in Urubamba, is the international option of Marriott Luxury Collection brand. One hundred and twenty-eight rooms, heated indoor pool, two restaurants, generous spa. Distinctive difference is the own train station: the train to Aguas Calientes departs from the hotel garden, radically simplifying Machu Picchu logistics.
For travellers valuing international consistency over boutique atmosphere, the right option. Service is Marriott standard; rooms are comfortable but not exceptional. The train station is what justifies the choice.
Rate: USD 380-580. Recommended for logistics-prioritising travellers.
Aranwa Sacred Valley
The Aranwa Sacred Valley, in Yucay, is the local option —the Aranwa chain is Peruvian, with properties in Cusco, Paracas and Colca too. One hundred and twelve rooms in a restored colonial hacienda, operating seventeenth-century chapel, viceregal-art museum in the hotel (with original pieces), spa with Andean treatments, two restaurants. The valley's most historic atmosphere: the original hacienda belonged to the Manríquez de Lara, a colonial Cusco family.
For travellers valuing historical density over contemporary luxury, Aranwa wins. For those seeking modern facilities (gym, sauna), less competitive.
Rate: USD 320-480. Recommended for intermediate-budget travellers.
Quick comparison
For honeymoon: Sol y Luna, no discussion. Independent casitas with private garden, Wayra restaurant for romantic dinner, rural-mansion atmosphere.
For active traveller: Explora Sacred Valley. Daily-excursion programme, all-inclusive, criterion-led guided outings.
For family: Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba. Open space, activities for children, organic garden for visits.
For Machu Picchu without logistical stress: Tambo del Inka. Own train station.
For intermediate budget: Aranwa Sacred Valley. Historic hacienda with cordial service, reasonable price.
The Sacred Valley has better hotels than Cusco. The kind altitude, green gardens, six-thousand-metre mountains in the background: everything conspires to make lodging here superior. Peru's paradox is that the capital of an ancient empire has hotel infrastructure inferior to its periphery.

What matters beyond price
Three considerations define the Sacred Valley experience.
Altitude: 2,870 metres vs 3,400 of Cusco. For altitude-sensitive people, the difference is decisive. The Sacred Valley is the ideal base for initial acclimatisation before Cusco.
Distance to the Machu Picchu train: Ollantaytambo station is the main departure point. Tambo del Inka has its own station (zero distance). Sol y Luna and Aranwa are 30-40 minutes by car. Inkaterra and Explora 25-35 minutes.
Service: Sol y Luna and Inkaterra are boutique hotels with personalised service. Tambo del Inka is standard Marriott (consistent but impersonal). Explora and Aranwa sit in the middle.
