What a Luxury Peru Trip Really Costs per Person

Three ranges —starter, premium, ultra— with line-by-line breakdown of what is paid for what.

The figures of luxury Peru trips circulating online are confusing. Some agencies publish wide ranges ("from USD 3,500 to USD 30,000") that do not orient. Others only publish very expensive itineraries to anchor the conversation. This guide does the opposite: three concrete ranges with real breakdown, based on quotes effectively delivered to clients in 2025.

Starter Range: USD 8,000-12,000 per person, 8-10 days

This range covers Lima + Cusco/Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu in bespoke format with five-star hotels but without the most exclusive experiences. It is the "introduction to Peru" trip for couples or solos who value quality but have contained budget.

Breakdown per person in double room:

Hotels (USD 2,800-4,000): Hotel B Lima 2 nights (USD 380/night), Inkaterra La Casona Cusco 1 night (USD 720/night), Sol y Luna Sacred Valley 3 nights (USD 580/night), Inkaterra Machu Picchu 1 night (USD 800/night), El Mapi by Inkaterra Aguas Calientes 1 night (USD 280/night).

Restaurants and meals (USD 800-1,200): two dinners at award-winning restaurants (Maido or Astrid&Gastón in Lima, Cicciolina or MAP Café in Cusco), hotel lunches, breakfasts included. Does not include Central or Mil Centro.

Transport (USD 1,500-2,000): Lima-Cusco-Lima flights in premium economy (USD 280), private transfers with Toyota Fortuner or equivalent, Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes round trip (USD 220).

Experiences (USD 1,500-2,200): half-day Lima tour with private guide, Pisac market and ruins with guide, Machu Picchu tour with guide, no exclusive experiences such as Nazca overflight.

Travel design fee and support (USD 800-1,200): bespoke design included, 24/7 support during trip, post-trip debrief.

Which traveller: first-time Peru couple, contained honeymoon budget, eight to ten-day stay, comfort priority without need for maximum luxury.

Premium Range: USD 12,000-18,000 per person, 10-14 days

The premium range adds more destinations (Arequipa or Lake Titicaca or Amazon), superior hotels, and exclusive experiences. It is the complete Peru trip for couples with time and adequate budget.

Breakdown per person in double room:

Hotels (USD 4,500-6,500): Country Club Lima Hotel 2 nights (USD 580/night), Belmond Hotel Monasterio Cusco 2 nights (USD 1,100/night), Belmond Río Sagrado or Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba 3 nights (USD 850/night), Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Machu Picchu 1-2 nights (USD 1,800/night), add premium destination with Andean Lodges Lares or Las Casitas Colca.

Restaurants and meals (USD 1,500-2,200): dinner at Central Lima with paired tasting menu (USD 380 per person), dinner at Maido (USD 280), Mil Centro in Cusco (USD 320), restaurants in each destination. Some hotels include full board.

Transport (USD 2,000-2,800): Lima-Cusco-Arequipa-Lima domestic flights in business when available, premium private vehicles (BMW or Mercedes-Benz), Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu (USD 480 round trip).

Experiences (USD 2,500-3,800): complete private Lima tour with chef workshop visit, private shamanic ceremony in Patabamba, Nazca overflight (USD 480), textile tour with certified master weaver, preferential Machu Picchu access before public hours (USD 380).

Travel design fee and support (USD 1,500-2,200): complete bespoke design with three drafts and calibration, premium 24/7 support with dedicated travel designer, vehicle and driver available for last-minute changes.

Which traveller: couple with prior experience in premium international travel, second Peru trip or first with ample time, anniversary or honeymoon trip with adequate budget.

The jump from starter to premium is felt mainly in hotels (Belmond and Sanctuary Lodge) and exclusive experiences (Nazca overflight, private ceremonies).

Ultra Range: USD 18,000-25,000+ per person, 14-18 days

The ultra range includes everything above plus experiences requiring six-month advance reservations, top hotels, and charter flights. It is the extended Peru trip with all doors open.

Breakdown per person in double room:

Hotels (USD 8,000-12,000): executive suite at each premium-range hotel, adding Hotel Casa San Felipe in Lima 2 nights, Belmond Andean Explorer (luxury train) Cusco-Puno 2 nights with premium cabin (USD 2,800), Sanctuary Lodge executive suite.

Restaurants and meals (USD 2,500-3,500): private dinner at Central with Virgilio Martínez in kitchen (USD 1,200 per table), exclusive dinner at Mil Centro with Pia Leon, private lunch with Maido chef off-menu.

Transport (USD 3,500-5,500): Lima-Cusco air charter to avoid commercial (USD 4,500 per Cessna 208 up to 9 passengers), Cusco-Sacred Valley helicopter (USD 1,200 per hour), Belmond Andean Explorer in premium cabin.

Experiences (USD 3,500-5,000): shamanic ceremony with Doña Bernardina in Patabamba (2-day programme), Salkantay lodge-to-lodge trek with Mountain Lodges of Peru, Manú expedition with special permits in restricted zones, 7-day textile workshop with Nilda Callañaupa.

Travel design fee and support (USD 2,500-3,500): complete bespoke design, dedicated travel designer throughout trip (not just 24/7 support), private guide with editorial experience at each destination.

Which traveller: exceptional traveller with three to four weeks, second or third Peru trip with deep interest in exclusive experiences, budget justifying unrestricted trip.

What is NOT included in any range

Three categories fall outside bespoke quotes:

First, international flights. Lima from Madrid on Air Europa: USD 800-1,500 round trip economy, USD 2,500-4,000 business. From New York with LATAM: USD 600-1,200 economy, USD 2,000-3,500 business.

Second, tips. Standard: USD 50-80 per day per private guide, USD 30-50 per day per driver, 10% in restaurants (varies if service included), USD 20-30 per porter on trek. Total for ten-day trip with guides and driver: USD 800-1,200.

Third, personal expenses: souvenirs, premium drinks outside included meals, spa massages, additional internet, expedited laundry.

The most common error is underestimating end-of-trip costs: tips, textile purchases, last-night dinner with premium wine. For starter and premium ranges, budgeting USD 1,500-2,500 additional per person in personal expenses avoids the surprise.

How cost distributes between concepts

Approximately, in a bespoke Peru trip, costs distribute thus:

Hotels: 35-45% of total. The largest line and the one that changes most between ranges.

Experiences and guides: 20-30%. What most distinguishes bespoke from standard tour.

Internal transport: 15-20%. Domestic flights, private transfers, trains to Machu Picchu.

Restaurants (those not included in hotel): 8-12%. Dinners at award-winning restaurants, not lunches.

Travel design fee: 5-12%. Higher in ultra range due to greater design and support time.

When it is paid

The bespoke standard is 30% on confirmation (after the second draft) and 70% at 30 days from the trip. Some premium reservations —Sanctuary Lodge, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, Belmond Andean Explorer— require prepayment on confirmation and are covered with the initial 30%.

For confirmations less than 60 days from trip, payment is 100% on confirmation. For more than six months, 20% on confirmation and 80% at 30 days is accepted, with cancellation by conditions.

Frequently Asked

Possible by reducing duration to 6-7 days, giving up one or two top hotels, and eliminating exclusive experiences. Below USD 6,000 it is difficult to maintain bespoke quality; better well-done private tour.

May-June and September-October have best price-climate balance. December-January is typically low season due to rains (15-25% savings on hotels). July and August are the most expensive.

Reservations six to eight months ahead guarantee availability but not necessarily better price. Some hotels give 10-15% discount for advance booking; the most demanded (Sanctuary Lodge, Belmond Río Sagrado) do not.

Nazca overflight (USD 480): yes, unique worldwide. Central dinner with Virgilio Martínez (USD 1,200): yes for gastronomy lovers. Belmond Andean Explorer (USD 2,800): yes if rail experience valued. Cusco-Sacred Valley helicopter (USD 1,200): not necessarily.

Standard 30/70 is most common. Some agencies accept three instalments (30%/40%/30%) at no extra cost. More than three usually carries finance surcharge.

Children 4-12: 60-75% of adult price at hotels, 100% in experiences and transport. Children 0-3: 0-30% by hotel. Family of 4 (2 adults+2 children) typically costs 3-3.5x individual adult price, not 4x.
