Sport Fishing and Exploration on Amazon Rivers
Peacock bass, paiche and dorado in Amazon tributaries — South America's most demanding catch-and-release fishing.
By Kada Travel Editorial
Sport fishing in the Peruvian Amazon is one of the most demanding and least crowded experiences on the continent. Amazon rivers —Marañón, Ucayali, Pacaya, Samiria— host species international anglers come seeking: peacock bass (up to 12 kg), paiche (one of the world's largest river fish, up to 200 kg), dorado (hard-meat predator), Amazon corvina. This guide describes premium operators, optimal season, and catch-and-release protocols.
Untamed Angling — The premium option
Untamed Angling is the operator with the best sport-fishing infrastructure in Peru. Based in Iquitos, operates private lodges in remote zones of the Marañón river and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, accessible only by seaplane or five-hour boat.
The standard six-day programme includes: lodging in cabin over the river with private bath and air conditioning, fibreglass boat with 60HP motor and bilingual professional guide, premium fishing equipment (G. Loomis rods, Shimano reels, artificial lures), meals with local cuisine, and transfers from Iquitos in private small plane.
Fishing is mostly catch-and-release with strict protocol: the fish is measured, photographed and returned to water in less than 2 minutes. The exception is fish for food (small paiche, sábalo) cooked at lodge return.
Cost: USD 6,500-8,800 per person, all-inclusive (charter flights, boat, equipment, guide, meals). Five to six-month reservation.
Acute Angling — Marañón programme
Acute Angling, international peacock-bass specialist, operates annual programmes on the Marañón river in alliance with Peruvian operators. Their programmes are more fishing-intensive: 8-10 hours daily on water, with specific focus on record peacock bass (over 8 kg). Cabins are basic (limited air conditioning, shared bath) but fishing equipment is high-end.
Cost: USD 5,800-7,500 per person for 7 days, no flights. Recommended for experienced anglers focused on records.
Aqua Expeditions Lodge — Cruise fishing
The Aqua Expeditions Aria Amazon cruise, mentioned in our cruises guide, offers sport-fishing activities as part of the standard programme (not specialised operator but experience available). Ship's boat with fishing guide, light rods, focus on day fishing (not nocturnal). Fishing is complement, not main activity.
Cost: fishing activity is included in cruise rate (USD 4,500-6,500 per person for 4 nights). Recommended for casual anglers combining with general Amazon experience.
The species and seasons
The peacock bass (Cichla spp.) is the star species. Up to 12 kg, aggressive predator, fighter. Optimal season: July-October (low waters, fish concentrated in lagoons). World record: 13.6 kg, caught on the Marañón in 2019.
The paiche (Arapaima gigas) is one of the world's largest river fish. Up to 200 kg, requires heavy equipment and specific regulation. Fishing only with Ministry of Environment permit. Season: November-March (high waters).
The dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) is hard-meat predator, fighter and fast. Up to 25 kg. Season: June-November.
The Amazon corvina (Plagioscion squamosissimus) is more accessible for amateur anglers. Up to 6 kg, all year.
Catch-and-release: the protocol
Catch-and-release protocol in the Peruvian Amazon is strict and monitored by responsible operators. Steps are:
1. Capture time minimised (no more than 5 minutes in fight).
2. Fish handling: with wet hands, no touching gills, fish out of water no more than 30 seconds.
3. Measurement and photo: quick, with fish held horizontally.
4. Release: fish kept in water until it recovers strength to swim (may take 30-60 seconds).
5. Barbless hooks mandatory to minimise injury.
The protocol ensures post-capture fish survival of 95%+ in responsible operators. In irresponsible tours, mortality can reach 20-30%.
Quality Amazon fishing is not competition or quantity. It is pursuit of a specific fish in specific water with specific technique, and the satisfaction of returning it intact to the river.

How they are booked
Untamed Angling and Acute Angling book five to six months ahead (limited capacity, 6-12 anglers per season). Aqua Expeditions two to three months (fishing is complement to standard cruise).
For our travellers, programmes are arranged as part of the Peru trip. Logistics include transfers from Lima, equipment (can be brought or rented on site), fishing permits (operators handle them), and combination with Cusco-Machu Picchu before or after.
A final note: serious Amazon sport fishing is for anglers with prior experience. For beginners with casual interest, the fishing included in the Aria Amazon cruise is the best introduction.
