Peru has a long tradition of ancestral medicine —from coca leaves for altitude to the thermal treatments of the Colca Canyon. In the last ten years, this tradition has been integrated with contemporary wellness practices (yoga, meditation, spa) in restored haciendas of the Sacred Valley, Lima and Colca. This guide describes four premium wellness retreats with five to seven-night programmes.

Willka T'ika — Yoga retreat in Urubamba

Willka T'ika ("sacred flower" in Quechua) is the most established yoga retreat in Peru, founded in 1994 by American teacher Carol Cumes. Twenty rooms in five-hectare organic gardens in Urubamba, with yoga shala (dedicated space), spa with Andean treatments, vegetarian restaurant with garden produce, Andean ceremonies with resident paqo.

The standard seven-night programme includes two daily yoga classes (dawn and sunset), three spa treatments, a despacho to Pachamama ceremony, two cultural excursions (Ollantaytambo, Maras-Moray), and all vegetarian/vegan meals. Cost: USD 2,800-3,800 per person in double room.

The most considered retreat for serious yoga. Recommended for experienced practitioners.

Belmond Las Casitas del Colca — Premium thermal spa

The Belmond Las Casitas del Colca, mentioned in our Colca Canyon hotels guide, operates the most considered premium thermal spa in the area. Each casita has its own private thermal pool (38°C, fed by natural spring). The central spa offers Andean treatments —hot volcanic stones, Maras-salt exfoliation, oat-and-muña bath— and massages with traditional techniques (chacchador and coca-leaf cleansing).

The five-night wellness programme includes daily spa treatment, two yoga sessions, horseback rides through the canyon, ceremony with local paqo, and all meals with organic garden produce. Cost: USD 5,800-7,500 per person in casita.

The most premium retreat in infrastructure. Recommended for honeymooners or rest after active trip.

Inkaterra La Casona — Cusco urban wellness

The Inkaterra La Casona in Cusco, mentioned in our Relais & Châteaux guide, offers an urban wellness programme of three to five nights focused on altitude acclimatisation. Treatments are designed to accompany physiological adjustment to 3,400 metres: circulatory massages, baths with altiplano mineral salts, in-room enriched oxygenation, and altitude-specific nutrition (corn soups, coca tea, foods with adaptogenic properties).

Not traditional retreat —it is stay with strong wellness component. Recommended for first-time Peru travellers wanting to minimise altitude-sickness effects in early days.

Hot-stone spa at Andean hacienda
Andean spa treatments combine hot volcanic stones with local plants (muña, Cusco chamomile, chicajache) in techniques inherited from Inca medicine.

Andean Spirit — Shamanic retreat

Andean Spirit, on a private Patabamba hacienda an hour from Cusco, is the retreat with the deepest spiritual component. Ten-day programme combining daily shamanic work with resident paqo (Don Mariano Quispe), meditation practices, ceremonial vegan diet, and excursions to archaeological sites with spiritual guide.

Not for everyone. Serious retreat aimed at people with genuine interest in Andean cosmovision and deep personal work. Selection is by prior interview with retreat director. Cost: USD 4,800-6,500 per person, all-inclusive. Six-month reservation.

Quick comparison

For serious yoga with Western tradition: Willka T'ika.

For thermal spa and premium rest: Belmond Las Casitas del Colca.

For urban wellness and acclimatisation: Inkaterra La Casona.

For deep shamanic work: Andean Spirit.

What matters beyond the programme

Altitude: three of the four retreats sit above 2,870 metres. Acclimatisation is integrated into the programme but requires initial days of passive rest.

Diet: the four retreats offer vegetarian/vegan menus with local organic produce. For non-vegetarians, options with animal protein exist but the emphasis is on plant-based eating.

Combination with the trip: retreats are typically combined with cultural visits (Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lima). The most common format is 5 retreat days + 5 cultural-tourism days in a single Peru visit.

Peruvian wellness is not just coconut-oil massage and ambient music. It is the integration of ancestral Andean medicine with contemporary practices. The difference is felt in the depth of rest.

How they are booked

Willka T'ika and Andean Spirit require three to six-month advance (limited capacity, group programmes). Belmond Las Casitas and Inkaterra La Casona book one month ahead (individual programmes, more flexibility).

For our travellers, retreats are arranged as part of the Peru trip. Logistics include airport transfers, coordination with the rest of the itinerary (Machu Picchu, Lima), and prior communication with the retreat team about specific needs.

Frequently Asked

Willka T'ika has classes for all levels. For absolute beginners, we recommend private class before the group one.

Yes. We recommend arriving at Sacred Valley two nights before the retreat for acclimatisation. Yoga at 2,870m is demanding; the body needs adaptation days.

Belmond Las Casitas has flexible menu with animal protein. Willka T'ika is strict vegetarian but accepts fish in flexitarian version.

Willka T'ika USD 2,800-3,800 (7 nights). Belmond Las Casitas USD 5,800-7,500 (5 nights). Inkaterra La Casona USD 1,500-2,200 (3-5 nights). Andean Spirit USD 4,800-6,500 (10 nights).

Willka T'ika has bilingual teachers (English/Spanish). Belmond and Inkaterra are international with English service. Andean Spirit has cultural translator.

Belmond Las Casitas: definitely. The casita with private thermal pool is ideal. Willka T'ika is more spiritual and group-based, less romantic.
