Belmond Hiram Bingham

Back to Machu Picchu by Train

An interior worth its own pause

The Hiram Bingham is not a means of arrival — it is the journey itself. Four polished mahogany carriages from the 1920s, restored down to their inlay, carry a single dining room, a lounge bar and an open observation car. Brass fixtures catch the light. Crystal stands ready on every table. The effect is unmistakably Pullman, and deliberately theatrical, in a way that feels earned rather than assumed.

A meal, a cocktail, a citadel

The hours pass to a slow choreography of courses. A four-course tasting menu by the Belmond kitchen draws on Andean produce — cuy confit, trout from the Urubamba, a dessert of lúcuma and chocolate. Cocktails are mixed in the lounge to live boleros and Peruvian jazz. By the time you step off at Aguas Calientes, the train itself has become part of the memory of Machu Picchu.
