Private Experiences at Machu Picchu Few People Know
Dinner under the stars at a huaca, dawn shamanic ceremony, archaeological visit with the site director.
By Kada Travel Editorial
Machu Picchu receives 5,000 daily visitors and almost all do the same route: Aguas Calientes bus, circuit 1 or 2, photo at the classic viewpoint, return in the afternoon. What most do not know is that there is a layer of private experiences —some authorised by Peru's Ministry of Culture, others by local communities, others by relationship with the site director— accessible only to travellers with specific prior coordination. This guide describes five experiences few people know.
Private dinner at a huaca
The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge coordinates, with Ministry of Culture permission, private dinners at closed Saqsayhuamán sectors (Cusco's Inca fortress) or, less frequently, at the lower ceremonial sector of Machu Picchu after public closing. Table for 2-8 people, hotel chef, live Andean music (charango, quena, zampoña), torch lighting, tasting menu based on Andean produce.
The experience is, without discussion, the most exclusive in Peru. The permit is restrictive: only two dinners per month at Saqsayhuamán, one at Machu Picchu when authorised (2-3 times a year). Cost: USD 1,200-2,500 per person, by location. Four to six-month reservation.
Archaeological visit with the site director
The Ministry of Culture permits, in specific cases, archaeological visits to the site guided by the director of the Machu Picchu archaeological zone —professional archaeologist with doctorate, official authority. The visit is made before public opening (5:30-7:00 AM) or after closing (5:30-7:00 PM), with maximum 4-person groups.
The route covers sectors closed to public: the military sector (under restoration), the lower terraces facing the Urubamba river, and the ceremonial-sector walls with technical explanation of Inca architecture. Cost: USD 2,500-4,000 per person. Limited availability (3-4 visits per month). Only for travellers with genuine archaeological interest.
Dawn shamanic ceremony
The Quechua communities of Patabamba or Chinchero (an hour from Cusco) offer dawn shamanic ceremonies with paqos (Andean shamans) practising "despacho to Pachamama" according to pre-Incaic tradition. The ceremony lasts 2-3 hours, is held at dawn at an outdoor ceremonial table, and includes offerings of coca, seeds, alpaca wool and sweets (all symbolic elements of the Andean cosmovision).
It is not tourist theatre —it is living practice. The paqo recites prayers in Quechua and Spanish, explains symbolism, and invites the participant to make their own offering with their specific intention. Cost: USD 280-450 per person. Two-week reservation. Recommended only for travellers with genuine interest in Andean spirituality.
Inti Punku privatisation at dawn
The Inti Punku (Sun Gate) is the point where Inca Trail walkers enter the site at dawn on the fourth day. For Belmond Sanctuary Lodge guests, there is the option to climb to Inti Punku at dawn (without having done the Inca Trail), with private hotel guide. The climb takes 60 minutes, starts at 5:00 AM, and reaches the summit just as the sun rises east over the Putucusi wall.
The difference from the standard visit is radical: at 5:30 AM no one is at Inti Punku, the light is golden, and Machu Picchu appears below in backlight —the definitive postcard, without the photographer queue at the classic viewpoint. Cost: USD 480-680 per person (includes guide, picnic-style breakfast on the climb, water, snacks). Sanctuary Lodge guests only.
Photography session with professional photographer
For honeymoon, anniversary or serious visual production, the photography session with professional Peruvian photographer exists. Three top photographers work in Machu Picchu: Renzo Cárdenas (Cusco, destination wedding specialist), Marina Kavtaradze (Lima, editorial photography), Inka Films (production company specialised in video).
The session includes: site entry with special permits for photo shoot (not standard), 3-4 hours of shooting with local archaeological guide, post-edit of 50-80 final photos, and optional 2-3 minute video. Cost: USD 1,800-3,500 per session, by photographer and duration. Three-month reservation.
Private Machu Picchu experiences are not luxury of ostentation. They are access to site versions the general public cannot have: the site before dawn, the closed-to-public sector, the living shamanic ceremony.

How they are booked
The five experiences require three to six-month coordination, depend on Ministry of Culture permits, and are only available through authorised operators with official relationship (including Kada Travel). They are not booked directly on public websites or through general tourism agencies.
For our travellers, they are handled as part of the honeymoon or anniversary package. For travellers returning to Peru, they are the category we most recommend —the difference from the first trip (standard visit) is transformational.
