The Best Luxury Lodges in Tambopata and the Amazon

Tambopata is the most accessible Peruvian Amazon. Thirty-five-minute flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios's capital, and then one to three hours of boat down the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers to the lodge. Three establishments dominate the luxury segment, each with a distinct proposition: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica (Relais & Châteaux, the closest), Refugio Amazonas (intermediate in distance and price) and Tambopata Research Center (the most remote, scientific base). This guide compares them.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica

The Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, 45 minutes by boat from Puerto Maldonado, is the lodge affiliated to Relais & Châteaux. Thirty-five jungle-lodge-style cabins with thatched roofs and wooden walls, no air conditioning (natural ventilation through mosquito nets), restaurant with Amazonian produce, included activity programme (guided walks, fauna observation, night navigation).

The distinctive piece is real sustainability. One hundred per cent local employees, full recycling programme, solar energy in cabins, reforestation programme with local schools. Inkaterra is also the operator with the largest research investment: the property includes a 30-metre canopy walk for bird observation from the forest top.

Rate: USD 720-1,180 per person/night, all-inclusive (meals, activities, transfers from Puerto Maldonado). Recommended for couples and families with children over eight.

Refugio Amazonas

The Refugio Amazonas, operated by Rainforest Expeditions, is the intermediate option. Thirty-two cabins on a property two hours by boat from Puerto Maldonado (deeper into the jungle than Inkaterra). Cabins with three walls (the fourth open to the forest, protected by mosquito net), restaurant with local produce, included activity programme.

Difference from Inkaterra is pristineness. Refugio Amazonas is deeper in the jungle —less accessible, more fauna, more rustic atmosphere. Cabins have fewer amenities but experience is more immersive. For travellers valuing nature over comfort, the segment's best option.

Rate: USD 480-720 per person/night, all-inclusive. Recommended for travellers with jungle experience or naturalists.

Tambopata Research Center

The Tambopata Research Center, also Rainforest Expeditions, is the region's most remote lodge. Three hours by boat from Puerto Maldonado, within the reserved zone of Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. Twenty-four cabins, scientific-base atmosphere rather than resort, shared dining room, activity programme guided by resident biologists.

The reason to come is the Chuncho clay lick —the world's largest macaw clay lick, where 200-400 red and green macaws descend each dawn to eat salt clay. The lodge is five minutes by boat from the lick. The world's only lodging with direct access to this spectacle.

Rate: USD 580-820 per person/night, all-inclusive. Recommended for professional photographers and travellers seeking the most immersive version.

Tambopata premium-lodge cabins combine thatched roofs, natural ventilation and mosquito nets — no air conditioning but comfortable.

Experience comparison

For honeymoon and first Amazon: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica. Closer, more comfortable, Relais & Châteaux atmosphere.

For couples valuing forest immersion: Refugio Amazonas. More remote, more jungle-like atmosphere.

For serious photographers and naturalists: Tambopata Research Center. Direct access to Chuncho clay lick.

For families with 6-12-year-old children: Inkaterra (better family infrastructure) or Refugio Amazonas (children's programme).

What matters beyond price

All-inclusive: all three lodges include meals, activities and boat transfers from Puerto Maldonado. They do not include flights, tips (USD 25-40 per day per person), premium alcoholic beverages or spa services (Inkaterra has spa with separately paid services).

Climate: Tambopata is 28-32°C by day and 22-26°C at night year-round. High humidity (80-95%). In rainy season (November-April) it can rain several days in a row. All three lodges have palm roofs, keeping cabins cool but not noise-proof.

Internet: limited in all three. Inkaterra has WiFi in common areas (slow). Refugio and Tambopata Research Center have limited satellite connection only for emergencies. For travellers needing permanent connectivity, consider.

Inkaterra is the Amazon with hotel service. Refugio is the Amazon with jungle cabin. Tambopata Research Center is the Amazon with scientific base. All three are real, but none replaces the others.

How to combine it

The formula we recommend for the standard traveller: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, three to four nights. Combination with Cusco-Machu Picchu is natural: Lima → Cusco → Tambopata (3-4 nights) → Cusco → Machu Picchu → Lima.

For the serious Amazon traveller (photographer, naturalist, amateur biologist), we recommend Tambopata Research Center, five to seven nights. Distance and clay lick justify longer immersion. Combinable with two to three Inkaterra nights at the start for forest acclimatisation.
