The Lodge-to-Lodge Trek to Machu Picchu

Back to Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

What this trek inverts

Most trekking holidays measure the day. The lodge-to-lodge route inverts that arithmetic — what you remember, by the end of the trek, are not the kilometres but the rooms. Each evening's walk ends at a private mountain lodge built specifically for this circuit: hot outdoor tubs at altitude, fireplaces, plated dinners with wine, real linen, real walls. The route follows a Salkantay variant through high glacier passes and cloud forest, but the night is the structural element of the journey.

Why it suits a particular traveller

This is the trek for travellers who want the physical experience of an Andean crossing without the camp-and-tent register that defines most alternatives. We recommend it for couples on a milestone trip, for travellers in their fifties and sixties who still want the high passes, and for anyone whose objection to trekking has always been the mattress. The trail does not arrive at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate — that route is reserved for the Inca Trail proper — but it does deliver you to the citadel by train at the end of the final descent, with a body that has already understood why the journey matters.

  • Approximately 64 km over six to seven days through Salkantay variant routes
  • Maximum altitude approximately 4,650 m at Salkantay Pass
  • Each night in a private mountain lodge with hot tubs and chef-led dinners
  • Final arrival at Machu Picchu by train via Aguas Calientes
