Where to Eat in Machu Picchu Town: The Complete List

Indio Feliz, Chullpi, Tree House, Café Inkaterra, Tinkuy — six addresses in the town that exists only because the citadel exists.

Machu Picchu Town (Aguas Calientes) is a service town born to serve the citadel's visitors —it has no culinary tradition of its own, sits on no commercial route, and all its produce arrives by train. Even so, six consistent addresses explain how to eat well before or after visiting the ruins. This is the complete list.

Indio Feliz

Over two decades in the town, Aguas Calientes's culinary institution —a French-Peruvian bistro founded by a French chef, eclectic decor of objects collected over years, three-course menu with meat, fish and vegetarian options. The town's best-rated restaurant for consistency and service. Fills up fast in the window before the last train. USD 20-28 per person.

Chullpi

Traditional Cusco cooking in an elegant version: ancestral recipes presented with modern aesthetics, grilled alpaca and trout ceviche as signature dishes. Polished atmosphere without other town options' informality. USD 25-35 per person.

Tree House Restaurant

International cooking with Peruvian touches —meats, pastas, vegetarian options and signature dishes— in a calm setting with personalised service. Good alternative when Indio Feliz has a long wait. USD 20-30 per person.

Tinkuy, Belmond Sanctuary Lodge

The only food point located literally next to the citadel entrance —not in town, but at the ruins' access-control gate. Peruvian and international buffet, ideal for visit-day lunch without going down to town and back up. USD 45-60 per person.

Cloud-forest vegetation and orchids in Machu Picchu Town
The cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu Town reaches into the town hotels' gardens — native orchids included.

Café Inkaterra

Inside the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, serves within a botanical-garden setting with over three hundred native orchid species and its own conservation programme. Contemporary Peruvian menu with herbs and fruit from the garden itself. Open to non-guests with reservation. USD 25-40 per person.

Toto's House

By the train tracks with a view of the Urubamba river, the group and family option: large space, extensive Peruvian and international menu, folk-dance shows some nights. Efficiently handles a large group dinner without complicated reservation. USD 15-25 per person.

In Machu Picchu Town you do not eat for the place's culinary tradition —you eat well despite the place geographically not being expected to have restaurants at all. Every ingredient rides the train up; logistics are, here, the real ingredient.

Which to choose, by moment

For the dinner that sums up the town: Indio Feliz. For elegant Cusco cooking: Chullpi. For visit-day lunch without going down to town: Tinkuy. For breakfast or lunch with garden: Café Inkaterra. For large group without complex reservation: Toto's House.

What matters beyond price

Most visitors have a fixed return train time to Ollantaytambo or Cusco —booking dinner around the train schedule is essential, Indio Feliz fills up in the window before evening trains. Aguas Calientes sits in a cloud-forest zone, with high humidity year-round. Everything costs more than in Cusco or the valley due to the train transport cost of every ingredient —expected, not arbitrary overpricing.

How to combine it

The recommended formula: breakfast at the hotel or Café Inkaterra before heading up to the citadel, lunch at Tinkuy if the day includes a second round at the ruins, and dinner at Indio Feliz or Chullpi the night before or after the return train —booking ahead if dates fall in high season (June-August).
